Queues at cremation grounds, data discrepancies belie UP govt’s claims

Uttar Pradesh’s fight against COVID-19 currently presents a grim picture, even if one goes by official data alone. However, when official claims are scrutinised in the context of long queues at cremation grounds and large-scale discrepancies in data, the picture becomes even more alarming.

The state government is now facing intense scrutiny from the Allahabad High Court, which has asked it to report the number of COVID-19 deaths in both public and private hospitals to a judicial officer in each district.

The court has also said the officer-in-charge of the police station under which each crematorium falls should ensure that COVID-19 deaths are recorded in the register and then communicated to the municipal body concerned.

Maharashtra reports 567 of 3,449 new COVID-19 deaths

Of the 3,449 COVID-19 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of fatalities with 567 patients succumbing to the novel coronavirus.

This was followed by Delhi with 448 deaths, 285 in Uttar Pradesh, 266 in Chhattisgarh, 239 in Karnataka, 155 in Punjab, 154 in Rajasthan, 140 each in Gujarat and Haryana, 129 in Jharkhand, 128 in Uttarakhand and 122 in Tamil Nadu.

The active cases in India have increased to 34,47,133 comprising 17 percent of the total infections, said the Union health ministry on Tuesday. The national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 81.91 percent.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced lockdown in the state till 15 May in view of rising COVID-19 cases. “In relation to detailed guidelines and other activities, today the crisis management group has been instructed to take action,” tweeted the chief minister.

India adds over 50 lakh COVID-19 cases in 15 days

India’s overall count of COVID-19 cases crossed the 2-crore mark on Tuesday with over 50 lakh infections being added in just 15 days.

The total COVID-19 infections had surpassed the one-crore mark on 19 December after which it took 107 days to reach 1.25 crore on 5 April. However, it only took 15 days for the cases to cross the 1.50 mark.

The tally of coronavirus cases in the country mounted to 2,02,82,833 on Tuesday nwith 3,57,229 new infections being reported in a day.

RR vs CSK match to be rescheduled after L Balaji tests positive for COVID-19, says report

The BCCI will reschedule Wednesday’s IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals as CSK has been forced into hard quarantine after bowling coach L Balaji tested positive for COVID-19.

As per the Board’s Standard Operating Procedure, anyone who has come in contact with an infected person has to undergo six days of hard quarantine and return three negative RT-PCR reports during the course of it.

“Tomorrow’s match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium between CSK and RR will be rescheduled as per SOP rules. As Balaji was in contact with the players, all of them have gone into hard quarantine. They are supposed to be tested everyday,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a potshot at Narendra Modi-led government over handling of second wave of COVID-19 in India and subsequent shortage of medical oxygen supply in several hospitals across the country.

He also mentioned that the only solution to curb the spread of coronavirus is by imposing a complete lockdown in the country. 

“The only way to stop the spread of Corona now is a full lockdown- with the protection of NYAY for the vulnerable sections. GOI’s inaction is killing many innocent people, ” the Congress leader tweeted.

Adar Poonawalla’s SII to invest 240 mn pounds in UK facilities 

Vaccine maker the Serum Institute of India is set to invest in facilities in Britain and could even manufacture inoculations in the UK in future, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday.

Johnson’s Downing Street office said the £240 million ($334 million) project would include a sales office, “clinical trials, research and development and possibly manufacturing of vaccines”.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) is the world’s largest vaccine maker by volume, and has been at the forefront of producing the lower-cost AstraZeneca coronavirus shot.

US ban on travellers from India comes into effect

The travel ban imposed by US President Joe Biden for people coming from India, which is experiencing one of the worst waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, came into effect on Tuesday.

Biden issued a proclamation on Friday restricting travel from India starting from 4 May. Certain categories of students, academics, journalists and individuals have been exempted from the ban, according to the US State Department.

US nationals, those having green cards, their non-citizen spouses and children below 21 years of age, are among the various categories exempted from the restrictions.
The new travel restrictions have been imposed for an indefinite period and will require another presidential proclamation to end it.

India’s COVID-19 recovery rate at 81.9%

At least 3,20,289 COVID-19 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours, said the health ministry on Tuesday. With this, the total number of recoveries in the country increased to 1.66 crore. 

The national COVID-19 recovery rate is currently at 81.9 percent.
